Gatey CYO Hoop Notes

By Kevin Devlin and Sean Monahan

Plenty of Gate of Heaven CYO hoop action again last weekend at the McDonough gym located within the Walsh Community Center. Here are highlights of several games.

On Saturday, December 8, the Gatey 3rd/4th grade girls’ travel team battled it out with their hoops peers from Saint Ann’s of Cambridge, and the home team won the battle, 22-10. For Gatey, Alana McNamara was the star of the game as she netted 16 points to lead her team to victory. The Gatey 3rd/4th grade boys’ travel team defeated Saint Ann’s of Dorchester, 27-15. For Gatey, Sean Costello played a tremendous game, scoring 12 points (including two three-pointers) and Aiden Cleary contributed 9.

The 16 and under Gatey boys’ travel squad (one of two teams in that age bracket) coached by Sean Monahan and Mike Alessandro, defeated Saint Agatha of Milton, 55-32. Despite poor shooting (35%) Gatey’s swarming defense stymied Saint Agatha’s offense, generating eighteen steals, four blocked shots, and overall, hauling down twenty-nine rebounds to control the boards. Gatey committed only four turnovers, had success pounding the ball inside to their big men, and made seven out of ten free throws. Conor Strickland scored 14 points. Eddie Murray had ten points and nine rebounds, while Marc Iannaco and Lydon McGarrell had seven and six points respectively.

Jake Harrison (seven points/five rebounds) ended his long Gatey career after this game, moving on to play varsity for Boston Latin. Jake attempted a thunderous dunk off of a fast break that fell short but he’ll be remembered for his successes over the years while improving his skills with hard work and determination.

On Sunday, December 9 in Gatey cadet house league action, the Metro Energy Club defeated the P.S Deli Club, 50-45. Early in the first half, the P.S. Deli Club went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-12 lead. The Metro Energy responded with a 10-0 run, realizing a 22-18 advantage at the break. In the second half, the Metro Energy Club continued to dominate the game and had a 46-30 lead with 3:36 left on the game clock. Coach Jimmy Geisel’s squad didn’t pack it in as they went on a late surge (a 15-4 run) but ran out of time. For the Metro Energy Club, Jake (The Distributor) Harrison netted 20 points. Owen Donovan tuned in another solid performance, scoring 13 points. Aldo Noury-Ello and Terry Markos contributed five points apiece in their victory. For the Metro Energy Club, James (the Beast) Buzzell scored 15 points, while Wellington Arias and Ryan MacDonald had 14 and 12 points respectively.

In the second cadet house league tilt, the Jack McDonough defeated the Boston Home Inspector Club, 56-26.The McDonough Club, utilizing their height advantage effectively, led at the half, 26-17.
