Gatey Hoop Notes

   There was plenty of CYO basketball action this past school vacation week. The CYO Vicariate Championships were ongoing, and on Sunday, February 25, the Gate of Heaven CYO boys’ cadet and midget house leagues held their semifinal playoff games.

   In the Gatey cadet house league, the P.S. Deli Club defeated the Boston Home Inspector’s Club, 44-38. The P.S. Deli Club took an early 13-7 lead, and realized a 23-14 advantage when forward Dermot Murray scored with one second remaining before intermission. In the second half, Coach Ralph Mazzeo’s Inspector’s didn’t fold up their tents and with 37 ticks left on the game clock, trailed by 3, 41-38. But their heroic bid fell short and they lost by 6. For the Inspector’s, center Darrell Handy played like former NBA star, Moses Malone, hauling down rebound after rebound and scoring 13 points. Jeremy Shepherd had 11points (including 2 treys) while James “The Gunslinger” Buzzell netted 13 points, including 3 three pointers from downtown. For the P.S Deli squad, coached by Michael Donovan, Damien Alvarez scored 14 points, including 3 treys from the top of the key. Manny Disla finished with 12, Jake Harrison had 10 and Joey Maiullari contributed 6 points.

In the second semifinal cadet house league game, the McDonough Club defeated the Metro Energy Club, 36-29.The McDonough Club led at the half, 18-6 and cruised to victory. For the Metro Energy Club, Jerry Marks scored 13 points, including 2 treys while Xavier Nunez had 7. For the McDonough Club, Zack Mitchell had 9 points, while Linden Cox and Jake Matthews had 7 and 6 points respectively.

Later that same day, in Gatey midget league playoff action, the East Boston Savings Bank Club defeated the Blasi Café Club, 22-8. For the Blasi Café Club, coached by Scott Bell, Mario Blasi had 4 points while Melvon Crump and Rocco Blasi had a deuce apiece. For the East Boston Savings Club, coached by Wynn Matthews, Jack Reidy scored 6 points. Paul Downey and Evan Filozov had 4 apiece while Greg Matthews, Ryan McGarrell, and Nolan Young each had a bucket.

In the second midget league semifinal tilt, the Ryan Club, coached by Paul Hogan, defeated the Iron Worker’s Club, coached by Greg Lally and James Schallmo. Down 15-9 at the break, the Ryan Club went on a 13-3 run in the second half to go home with a four-point victory, 22-18. For the Iron Worker’s Club, Tristin Pecevich scored 9 points and Ryan McDonald had 4. For the Ryan Club, Robert Wisniewski netted 14 points and Evan Pierce had 8.

The McDonough Club will play against the P.S. Deli Club this upcoming Sunday, March 4, at 12 noon, for the Gatey cadet house league title, and the East Boston Savings Bank Club will play against the Ryan Club at 1 p.m. for the Gatey midget house league championship.
