Basketball Free Throw Competition Scored Big

       

The events leading up to the big St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day finale continue to roll on and to entertain. Last week, the annual Basketball Free Throw competition; held at the Tynan Community School as always had some outstanding young South Boston athletic talent on full display as local kids; both the boys and the girls gave it their all. The event, sponsored by the South Boston Citizen’s Association was a pleaser and at times had the kids cheering at the top of their lungs.

The Basketball Free Throw competition attracts kids, ages from 8-17 from every part of the neighborhood.  They bring with them not only their competitive spirit and well-honed athletic skills but also their sense of good sportsmanship.

The winners who walked away with the trophies this year were:

Boys – 8-10 yrs. old: 1st place: Tristan Pecevich, 2nd place: Robert Wisniewski, 3rd place: Anderson Wisniewski.

Girls – 8-10 yrs. old: 1st place: Phoebe Alto, 2nd place: Ella Welch

Boys – 11-13: 1st place: Michael Nunez, 2nd place: Richard Betemit, 3rd place: Stephen Flynn.

Girls – 11-13: 1st place: Sarah Day, 2nd place: Phoebe Alto and 3rd place: Ella Welch.

Boys – 14-17: 1st place: Christian Mazzeo, 2nd place: Vlady Jiminez, 3rd place: Wellington Arias.

Trophies were handed out by Bernie O’Donnell Sr., Bernie O’Donnell Jr. and Cathy Davis.

On hand helping to oversee the competition and showing support for all the ST. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day events as he does each year was Ed Flynn.

As the days leading up to St. Patrick’s Day progress, the impressive lineup of activities will continue to provide entertainment for residents of every age group and interest. The volunteers from the South Boston Citizens Association along with the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council who sponsor the parade as well put in long hours and a lot of hard work to make sure this time of year in South Boston is festive and very special.
