On Thursday, July 12th, volunteers from State Street Corporation joined Save the Harbor/Save the Bay in a day of service at the Department of Recreation and Conservation (DCR)’s Carson Beach in South Boston. The group of 40, including Jason Meehan of South Boston, cleaned, swept, and weeded over a mile throughout the day maintain this 3-mile-long beach.

Volunteers picked up litter and swept the beach from the water to find trash that needed to be removed. They also spent the day weeding, cutting and pulling out plants growing under and up through the boardwalk. Another incredibly important job was invasive species removal on both the beach and in nearby Moakley Park. This included digging up sumac bushes along the seawall and cutting away vines growing around tree trunks.
“Any day on Carson Beach is a great day,” said Andrea Patton, Director of Partnerships and Advocacy at Save the Harbor/Save the Bay who led the group, “but this day was spectacular. People spending their day on the beach kept coming up to talk to us about stewardship opportunities. We all enjoyed the opportunity to educate community members on the environmental issues our beaches face and ways to get involved. Save the Harbor is incredibly grateful to State Street Corporation for their partnership in helping to preserve and protect this resource for everyone to enjoy.”
Carson Beach is part of Boston’s collection of the cleanest urban beaches in the country. It is because of stewardship and efforts like these that the region’s public beaches, such as Carson, continue to remain a healthy, urban natural resource for everyone to enjoy. Save the Harbor is committed to Boston Harbor and working with partners like State Street Corporation to maintain and share the harbor with the region’s residents.
